“Cooking with Wines” Series – Mint Juleps

Visit Us on the Web – Click Here

The Kentucky Derby and Mint Juleps go together year after year.  Spring is arriving, and we are all anxious to find refreshments that go perfectly with the warmer weather.  As fellow wine drinkers, we are always looking for a way to enjoy wine with a little twist of uniqueness.  CA Sunshine once published a great idea in Food.com.  Take a look, and if it sounds good, give it a try.

Wine Mint Julep

Ingredients:
1 cup orange juice
2 cups strawberry lemonade
12 fresh mint sprigs
1 1/2 cups boiling water
1 pint red wine, such as a dry rose or 1 pint Chianti wine

Directions:
1.  Add mint springs to boiling water and let stand five minutes. Strain and add to fruit juices. Cool.
2.  Just before serving, add red wine to mint/fruit juice mixture. Pour into glasses filled with ice.
3.  You may want to adjust the wine to mint/fruit juice to your tastes.

Servings:  4-6

Yesterday, we asked: “In the United States, a wine cannot legally be labeled ‘dessert’ unless it meets a minimum level of what?”

The answer is: “Alcohol”!!  If a wine does not contain at least 14% alcohol, US labeling requirements say that it cannot be labeled as a “dessert” wine!

Visit Us on the Web – Click Here

Invintions St Pattys DayWe are well aware that on this day, most people drink Guinness and maybe a pint of green beer; however, like any other holiday, wine is also a perfectly acceptable pairing option for traditional St. Patrick’s Day recipes!  So, here are our favorites:

Corned Beef & Cabbage – A St. Patrick’s Day tradition that is briny and salty. So, we suggest the following InVINtions’ wines to pair with this dish:

White Merlot
Bin 14 Riesling
Gamay Nouveau

Shepard’s Pie – You can make a quick and simple Shepherd’s Pie, and pair it with:

Merlot- Stag’s Leap District
Chardonnay
